I have stopped watching the news

You don’t care about the stuff that doesn’t affect your life. You have a roof over your head, food on the table, good clothes to wear and a job that you are supposed to go to because what else is the purpose of your life right? You have some friends you meet over for drinks. You have problems of your own. You have A girlfriend or a wife or a husband, a Daughter or a Son. You Eat. Work. Sleep. Repeat. And die. This is your world. You live in your tiny speck of a bubble oblivious to anything happening outside, unaware that everything in this world has a consequence which will affect you indirectly at some point in time. You dont realise that maybe, just maybe it’s possible that our lives are really just acting out a painting on the largest canvas in the universe.

But why think of this stuff right? Why think of anything that doesn’t even remotely affect us in the present? Why think of the Polar caps that are melting because of our negligence to be responsible? Why think of the innumerable fish, birds and marine life suffocating on our plastic waste because we never really cared about plastic disposal or recycling? Why care about the thousands of animals left to die after they are poached illegally? Why care about the innumerable loss of wildlife and inhabitants when the largest patches of forest burn down to ashes? Why care that the only planet, our only home is burning? Why care that the most intelligent species on this earth has managed to pave a path towards its own destruction?

So I have stopped watching the news. Because I figured if I don’t know about this stuff, it won’t affect me. It won’t poke at the helplessness of not being able to do anything that breaks me from the very core. Because let’s be honest, we are helpless creatures. All we can do is organise rallies and cleaning drives and sign petitions and plant trees. The people who can actually do something about this are the people with money. The big guns. The same people who shell out billions of dollars when a building of religion burns down.

Somewhere down this road of power, money and greed we all went wrong somewhere. We all left behind that one thing that differentiates us from animals, our humanity. Sometimes I feel we humans don’t even deserve this planet. We don’t deserve the oxygen we breathe. We have been entitled to this. Will we only realise this when things we use everyday become a luxury? When humans start dropping dead? When people with power and money, the real puppetiers of the society finally decide to pull the strings and shift the narrative from petty religious politics to environmental issues?

When will we realise it?
